I don’t know why Congress didn’t talk up Section 1312, Section D of the new health care bill as much, because it’s pretty significant; it places members of Congress, congressional staff, and all of their families on the new health care exchange. You may have seen this email floating around Republican circles:
Let me get this straight……we’re trying to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn’t read it but exempts themselves from it, to be signed by a president that also is exempt from it and hasn’t read it and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that’s broke.
What the hell could possibly go wrong?
Then it has a picture of that old whining cartoon lady who smokes cigarettes.
Unlike every past Congress who all had socialized health care (the horror!), this Congress, the same Nazi-oppressive, Communist-loving one, took itself off the cushy pedestals of its public option coverage, and placed the lives of their families in the new system. There is no longer an exemption for Congress from that of ordinary Americans, unlike the era of Reagan, George Bush Sr, George Bush Jr, Clinton, etc. If you hear this, please reply citing the new law and not the new lie. The relevant text can be found in this document and is quoted below:
(D) Members of Congress on the exchange
(I) REQUIREMENT: Notwithstanding any other provision of law, after the effective date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health plans that are —
(i) created under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act)
(ii) offered through an Exchange established under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act).
